Happy Mother's Day. For this occasion we have a beautiful gift for you.

The Gate, Things my Mother told me, a novel by Stan I.S. Law is an intimate novel of an eighty-year old women spending the last years of her life at the Institute of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The problems she must face are as different as they are unexpected from anything one can imagine in the 'outside' world, not the least of which is her husband's gradual deterioration under the unforgiving progression of Alzheimer's disease. As we follow the inevitable loss of her own faculties, we discover what unexpected compensations nature offers to those whom no one else can help. Surprisingly, the book is spiced with abundant humour....

The Institute

He sat so well in the saddle, as though he'd been born to ride a horse. Perfectly erect, heels pushed well down, arms relaxed, yet, I knew, he held the steed in a grip of iron. He'd spent a good part of his life looking down at us, mere mortals, so to speak. He'd joined the cavalry at sixteen and stayed faithful to his original 15th Regiment of the Pozna Lancers all his life, even though he later became equally as committed to other Regiments to which he had been transferred all over Poland. He was in active duty until taken prisoner in 1940. By then he was the Commanding Officer on horseback. A sabre poised against the German tanks.

I'm so very tired....

In each Newsletter we publish an essay or an article by Stan Law (a.k.a. Stanislaw Kapuscinski) with his inimitable slant towards the spiritual, metaphysical and philosophical perception of reality, while seriously peppered with humour.

Today we invite you to read THE STAGE (Essay #31 from BEYOND RELIGION vol. I) by Stanislaw Kapuscinski

I am but and actor, and the world is my stage. Was it Shakespeare who said that? Whoever it was, he was right. The world is a stage on which we enact our little dramas, comedies, and, if we are very unlucky, our tragedies.

Actually, the roles we play have nothing to do with luck. Luck is what the weak blame for their misfortunes. The bard I quoted also said: "It is not in our stars but in ourselves that we are underlings". If we only knew that our season on this stage is no more than a brief stint, tailored-made to learn a very specific lesson, we would not take our roles, not to mention ourselves, quite so seriously.

Some of us discover the role we are supposed to play early. This discovery is called self-realization. People lucky enough to make this discovery are those who fulfil their purpose in life. They are the few, the chosen. Or perhaps, they just looked harder. They come in all walks of life but they have one thing in common. They are a happy lot.
